When I accelerate in D, slow to moderate, the tranny wants to stay in
the gear it starts in for a longer time than I would intuit. It gets
up to about 2000rpm before shifting into the next gear. As a test I
put the car into sport mode and pulled away from a light smartly but
not really flooring it and the tranny stayed in gear until the rev
counter was up to 6000RPM, then shifted into the next higher gear.

Question? Are either or both of these behaviors normal? What gear is
first when in D? First or is it second?

I have a Mercedes Wagon 300TE ’88.  I would like to get a wagon with a 5
Speed Transmission.  I don’t like auto transmissions!  Does BMW make a
decent size wagon with a 5 speed.  The ones I have seen seem very small.
Should I get an older one?  One year and model are good.  I don’t need a
huge wagon but don’t want a compact wagon either.  I do alot of home repairs
and am always lugging around drywall, lumber, etc. and so I want a decent
size wagon.
