97 M3 air pump, it it necessary?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:40 am

Hi all I found the air pump in the M3 and suspect it is used to reduce
emissions and ultimately power. Is this so? and is it necessary for the car
to run properly?
Thanks
I live in Australia by the way.

  1. Na, BMW always puts in stuff you don’t need. I rebuilt and engine and had a
    box of junk left over.
Just replace the pump with a large can of Fosters and run the lines into the
can. (Make sure you drink the beer BEFORE you attempt the installation.

  3. Ok.
My point was that BMW put it in there for a reason, and whatever effect(s)
it has have been taken into account in the management systems. I suppose you
could take it out, but I’m sure that that would be just the beginning of
your problems. There would be lots more to fix.

If you are looking to improve performance, I would suggest that there are
many other, better, ways to go about it without possibly damaging the engine
    or making the car undriveable.

  4. Just so you know, it only runs for a few minutes on a cold start anyway,
so why worry about it?  As it’s electric, it does NOT affect engine power,
except for the (small) additional load on the alternator when it’s
running.  Ignore it and be happy!

  5. Thankyou, I did notice a clutch on it but didn’t know when it was active.
