Any rumors on whether or not BMW plans to ship diesels to the US by the time
the fuel is cleaner?
I’ve heard that premium diesel may be available in 2006+.
It seems to be the only reason BMW will not risk starting a new market.

I think your cousin is pulling your leg. No BMW diesels are currently
available in the US.

Well, yes, but you can import any car, even the one that has no US safety /
emission certification, if you export it within 12 months. And you _must_
export it!
This is what some expatriates do when they move to US temporarily and they
want a car that meets regulations in their home country when they return
with the car.

Would it be possible to buy the diesel in the BMW European driving program?
I should probably just call BMW USA.

No. Cars sold thorugh the European delivery program (for the US) are
regular US-spec models. Same as you can, and do, get from any
dealership.

This is probably unrealistically ‘hassleful’ for a US-based person but one
might be able to get specials if ordered from a Germany or other
Europe-based dealer.
I did this three years ago, though with another famous German brand. I
ordered from a German dealer and collected the car from Germany, driving it
to the UK.
For resale reasons it made sense to spec up the car to UK standards but some
minor variations remained. My reason for doing this was to save money on
the UK dealer prices.
The drawback is that one has to undertake all the transport and import
issues oneself. In my case not a big deal but to the USA…?….

I suppose I will just have to be patient with the Gov’t and their diesel
regulations. I have heard that US will be shifting to cleaner diesel by
2006. I hope that goes well. For now, I will stick to the VW Jetta Diesel.
Thanks for your help.

Sensible, as you might otherwise damage a diesel engine (plus catalytic
converter) not set up for US-quality fuel.
