I am planning to buy a new beemer 5 series. Does anyone have any
suggestions which one to buy. And what accessories to avoid or make sure
to get ? also what abt the colors which do u think is the best and same
for the leather seats ?
what is the difference between a moon roof and a sun roof ?
thanx
amit khanna
Amit,
A moon roof is made of glass so that you can see out of it with it closed
(eg. to look at the moon at night) and a sun roof must be open to let the
light in.

I also looked at new 5 here in Phoenix. Std moonroof is uninsulated glass
with a plastic cover only. On a 110 deg sunny summer day does anyone know
how much this is going to contribute to heating and is the a/c adequate?.

Personally I like the silver. I think it looks very nice, I also like the
black. Of course get the black leather. White leather is very nice but some
what hard to keep up on. I saw at a dealer near me today, http://www.keeler.com so
many nice Bimmers. There was these 2 awesome M3′s. One was a Silver 4 door
with White leather. The other was a fully loaded black coupe. They were SO
nice. I was practically drooling. Just thought you might like to know.

The Moon Roof is basically a glass panel instead of metal and comes with a
sliding sunshade that rattles (at least on my car it does!).

After driving a couple 3 series, I changed to a 97, 528 in April of last
year. Quite a car, I must say. Very very smooth, and a blast to drive. I
don’t know about your driving style, but if you like to push in the corners
and really get the most from the machine, I would probably recommend a 540
I know my next will be an M3 or a 540, possibly the M5 ).
The "extras" are very much, what ever you want. I know the wood inside
wasn’t something I like at all when I purchased the car, and now, I’m liking
it quite a bit.
of course, the feature of features is the heated steering wheel. Don’t know
where you live, but here in WA state, it’s a nice feature that gets used
daily.
The only thing BMW did w/o warning was a huge change to the stereo. In my
325′s the sound was primarily from the rear ( as it is in most cars ). In my
new car ( and the newer M3s too ), the sound is very much from the front.
Again, at first, I didn’t like it at all, but it too has grown on me. This
"adjustment" was so profound that I took the car back and told them that the
stereo must be busted. The service guy and I went around the lot sitting in
other 5′s before we desided it must be by design.
One last note – I love the stick shift over auto – give quite a bit more
power. The 1st time I drove a 5 (auto) is was very lack-luster ( remembering
I drive for the corners ) – the stick put a bit of soul back in the beast.

Have you tried using the Fader control to control front and rear speaker
volume level?

I am sure that whatever model you pick you will be happy with. I recently went
throught the same process you are now going through. I chose the 540i 6-speed
model. I drove the standard 540i and was unimpressed with the ride, I have been
driving a 318is and liked the firm feel. The standard suspension seemed to me to
be a bit mushy. You probably should consider the sport suspension with whatever
engine you shoose. Remember that purchasing the automatic transmission over the
6-speed will save the the gas guzzler tax of about $2,000 dollars.
I chose the CD-changer, the fold down rear seats, heated front seats and sun
shades. Had the heated seats rear sun shades in a 750 and really liked them. As
for color I prefer white exterior with black interior. Black interiors show less
wear over time so depending on how long you plan to keep the car this is worth
considering. I keep my cars garaged most of the time so heat is not a problem
with the black upholstery. I have had three white BMW’s so far and the paint on
all three has held up well. To my knowledge BMW does not offer white upholstry
in the "5" series in leather. Colors available are Sand Beige, Grey, Aubergine,
Black.

This is only true for standard colors. There is always the option -BMW
Individual- which gives you whatever you want, be it pink leather or furry
dashboard (well, maybe not that but just about anything really). Do I need
to mention it has a price though…
The rambling goes something like:
"NO and NOT possible are not included in the vocabulary of the BMW
Individual program. The only restriction is that the options must comply
with BMW’s policy regarding quality, style and safety." <- This is not THE
official quote – but something similar, I don’t have it right here now.
Best wishes
