Hi. I have a 1982 733i with over 180,000 miles. Will using higher octane
gasoline such as Chevron Supreme improve fuel consumption and reduce
emmissions, or am I just wasting my money and should just stick to mid-octane
gasoline? Thanks.
Chris
Gasoline octane level is relevant only to knock resistance. It has nothing to
do with fuel consumption or vehicle emissions. You should use the minimum
octane level that you engine can ignite without experiencing detonation
(pinging). Anything more is, as you say, a waste of money. With your engine
and mileage, I’d predict you’d need about 89 octane fuel in the U.S., maybe
even 87.
