  &lt;p&gt;Gasoline octane level is relevant only to knock resistance. &#160;It has nothing to &lt;br /&gt; do with fuel consumption or vehicle emissions. &#160;You should use the minimum &lt;br /&gt; octane level that you engine can ignite without experiencing detonation &lt;br /&gt; (pinging). &#160;Anything more is, as you say, a waste of money. &#160;With your engine &lt;br /&gt; and mileage, I&#039;d predict you&#039;d need about 89 octane fuel in the U.S., maybe &lt;br /&gt; even 87. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Mike Miller &lt;br /&gt;
