Problems with 1983 533ia

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:29 pm

My mom drives a 1983 533ia, it has 89K Miles on it.  Here are 2 Problems
that have me concerned.
#1 The steering wheel Centers and Uncenters itself.. Meaning, it not only
makes loud clunking sounds.. but the wheel will be severely canted to the
right after making a right hand turn, its not as bad when you make a left,
and making a left-hand turn will sometimes re-center the wheel.  This has
me scared, as I dont think its safe to drive. =O

#2, the Heater output is inadequate, based on my experiences with my Other
E28s, its weak at best, the car never really gets hot, like my E28 535i,
535is or M5.

Thanks! =)

perhaps your steering gearbox is loose… it’s the piece on the other end
of the steering column from the sttering wheel. or perhaps the pitman arm
on the steering gearbox is loose. nothing else really can alter the centering
    like that.

get a heater valve core- it should be about $30. they’ll try to sell
you the whole valve for $100, but tell them you just need the insert.

the valve is mounted on the firewall in the engine bay right in front
of the driver. if you park your car with its nose lower than the tail,
you don’t even need to drain the coolant to replace the insert. just
remove the 4 screws, wiggle the cylinder in the middle until it comes
out, then stick the new one in. you’ll probably want to clean up the
inside of the valve while it’s open.
