Hello,
I have a quick question… The temp gauge on my 86 528e isn’t working.
The thermostat is fine, it’s just the gauge. How do I go about replacing
it, or repairing it?
Thanks,–

Easy, but … does the car have an airbag? Steering wheel must be removed
and you can be killed if the bag goes off in your face, have your shop get
the wheel off. Also, be aware that the instrument cluster electronics are
very ESD (electro-static discharge) sensitive and easily damaged if you or
the cluster are not properly grounded when you handle it.
If you do not have an airbag: Disconnect battery negative, put ignition
key in first postion to unlock steering column, pry off emblem on steering
wheel center, remove nut underneath, pull off steering wheel, remove screws
above and below steering column cover (lower screws are next to the lever
that adjusts the steering wheel length), remove upper cover, remove two
screws at top of instrument cluster, lift out cluster and remove electrical
connectors. Might as well replace service interval board batteries while
it’s apart.
Good luck.
